Fleet Refinish Training Page 1 Fundamentals Fundamentals When good sound practices are employed, the application and exposure characteris- tics of a quality product are predictable. The physical characteristics of modern day products require that they be used in accordance with manufacturer proven recom- mendations. These recommendations are based on fact and long term testing. The use of other than proven factory recommendations can result in poor product performance. In addition the shop conditions and its equipment must also fit the product needs during application. These following segments deal with the inter-related topics of product compatibility and ambient conditions of the facility. These topics should be considered before any prod- uct is applied during the refinish process as they have a direct bearing on the success of the repair. The vast majority of refinish paint products can be divided into two basic resin types, Thermoplastic and Thermoset. Thermoplastic and thermoset products do not always mix. If the products chosen are not compatible, wrinkling can occur! Always stay within the "COMPATIBLE TOPCOAT" recommendations found on PPG Product-Bulletins.
