4 INSIDe LINe 2012 Carnegie SCienCe awardS honor PPg glaSS SCientiStS Scientists from PPG Industries recently received the Advanced Manufacturing Award at the 2012 Carnegie Science Awards for work on the development of Solarban ® R100 glass. Introduced in 2010, the ability of Solarban R100 glass to transmit light and block solar heat, while it meets the aesthetic demand for neutral- reflective glass, helps reduce the need for interior artificial light, heating and cooling, which together account for nearly 60 percent of energy consumption in U.S. commercial buildings. PPg refiniSh SUPPortS oSU'S formUla bUCkeyeS raCing team PPG Automotive Refinish has been supporting the Ohio State University College of Engineering's Formula Buckeyes participating in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) racing challenges. Made up exclusively of students, the team designs and fabricates a high- performance, open-wheeled, formula-style racing car that competes against entries from more than 110 colleges and universities from around the country. PPG is a long-time team sponsor and has contributed to the students' efforts by making available all the necessary products including Envirobase ® High Performance waterborne basecoat and VC5200 Custom Clear from the Vibrance Collection ® to provide the car with a first-class finish. In addition, technicians at PPG's state-of-the-art training facility in Columbus, Ohio, provided their expertise in applying the finishes. The team's work with cutting-edge composite materials and innovative technologies will translate into practical development opportunities for the automotive industry to enhance fuel efficiency standards and minimize impact on the environment. It's this pioneering spirit that caught the attention of PPG and is why our Automotive Refinish team supports and collaborates with forward-thinking organizations. sTay on ToP wiTH PPg Training At PPG, we're proud to be innovators in the refinish industry. With a steady stream of breakthrough technology and products, we continuously strive to be your partner in making quality repairs. That said, it is easily understood why paint technicians at collision centers and commercial truck facilities must stay current with training. Consider just some of the new products PPG recently debuted. Deltron ® DC2000 Ultra Velocity Clear and DPLV 2.1 Epoxy Primer are recognized as potential game-changers. In this edition of Repaint Reporter alone, there are two new major product introductions— EPW115 Waterborne Speed Prime (p. 21) and Delfleet ® Essential Basecoat (p.30). Needless to say, if you're a paint technician it is essential that you have the knowledge and skill to put such product innovations to good use. Of course PPG's technical training is your best resource for accomplishing that mission. Our classes will not only help your collision center maintain the quality of your work. Attending our re-certification class every two years is necessary in order for your facility to offer the PPG Lifetime Paint Performance Guarantee. For shops spraying PPG waterborne products, it's especially important to maintain certification because now their work is backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal, an invaluable promotional asset (p.25). Our goal is to make PPG training informative, convenient and readily available. With classes offered year-round at 14 PPG Business Development Centers across North America, that's more than any other paint supplier.
