G A l l e r Y 30 High Tech "Woody" A Big Rig "Second to None" KMT 359, nicknamed "Second to None," took top honors in the 2010 Big Rig Build-Off, part of the 21 st Annual Paul K. Young Truck Beauty Championship at the annual Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Ky. The by-invitation-only contest is extremely competitive, but it's easy to see why this highly-customized 1984 Peterbilt 359 was named Grand Champion. Owner Kevin McIntyre of Port Charlotte, Fla., turned the truck over to Outlaw Customs of Henderson, Colo., gave them his ideas and let them work their magic. The Outlaw team chopped the truck 5 inches, shaved and suicided the doors, extended the frame to 300", fabricated an air-ride suspension and did so much more that they almost created a new truck. Then they applied the finishing touch in glowing Sunset Orange (908346) and White Diamond (5851) using PPG's Delfleet ® Evolution FBC premium basecoat topped with F3906 clearcoat. (Put on your sunglasses if you see this one on the road.) The Big Rig Build-Off is sponsored by PPG, challenging custom truck builders to create the ultimate working truck. This stunning work of art is the result when you combine the cutting-edge technology of Serotta—the internationally renowned, custom-build bike company—and the artful skills of PPG's own custom paint instructor Paul Stoll. The one-off version of Serotta's MediVci AE road bike convincingly appears to be built from oak, yet it's actually 100% high-tech carbon fiber, engineered and constructed by Serotta Composites, the strongest and lightest material available for performance bikes. The illusion was borne out of an invitation extended for Stoll to tour Serotta's paint facility in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and provide some fresh tips and ideas for Serotta's paint staff. Using the Nexa Autocolor ™ Aquabase ® Plus waterborne basecoat system, Paul worked his magic with gun and airbrush to create the beautiful juxtaposition between the old and the new. Serotta has used PPG Refinish coatings exclusively since 1988, and this partnership has developed an amazing array of custom finishes available for their bike enthusiast and racing customers. Each bike is custom fitted to the rider and the owner can design a personalized color scheme and paint design from literally hundreds of possible combinations and choices. "PPG has been a fantastic partner to Serotta over the years," adds Ben Serotta. "They provide us with the best products for finishing the best-built bicycles in the world. We owe great thanks to PPG and our local distributor partner Saratoga Autobody Supply."
