Booth #24501. AN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION IN PPG ORANGE A basecoat-clearcoat system by PPG helped Australia's Jetstar airline celebrate its 10 th birthday and encourage Twitter users to mention the company with a special orange Airbus A320 aircraft that should keep its good looks for many birthdays to come. The airline chose a DESOTHANE ® system from PPG's aerospace business because the superior color coverage of the basecoat and high-gloss clear topcoat afforded attractive aesthetics, faster process time and weight savings for related reduced fuel costs. The chosen PPG paint system helped overcome the challenge associated with the orange color, according to Rich Wilkinson, sales manager at the PPG Aerospace Application Support Center in Tullamarine, Victoria, Australia. "Orange is a color that does not normally hide well, so additional coats of paint are usually applied to achieve a good finish, which adds time to the repaint and weight to the aircraft. But compared with traditional coatings, Desothane HD/CA 9008 basecoats are heavily pigmented and have great opacity, so much less paint needs to be applied, resulting in a significant weight saving." STUDENTS TUNE IN TO COLOR TRENDS More than 125 professional designers and students from the San Francisco area recently got a look at future consumer color trends in a presentation by the PPG industrial coatings team. Entitled TRENDCAST ® Styling Directions 2014, the color show is based on a consensus of findings by 35 PPG global color experts and is aimed at keeping designers of consumer products on the leading edge of consumer taste for the next two years. The art shows were held at San Francisco's Academy of Art University (pictured) and in Cupertino, Calif. According to Joe Kowalski, PPG's global manager of color and surface design for consumer products, the color shows were successful because they demonstrated PPG's global color capability in a design-rich community. "We were able to attract many design professionals and customers who already work with PPG coatings, and to share our message with students who will be designing the consumer products of the future." TEAM PPG 5 PPG SPONSORS NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS The PPG Industries Foundation is sponsoring more than $340,000 worth of undergraduate college scholarships for U.S. students in communities where PPG Industries operates through National Merit Scholarship Corp. in 2014, including 54 new four-year scholarships. Scholarship winners are selected by National Merit Scholarship Corp., based on test scores and additional criteria, and they receive awards of $1,500 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. For consideration for the program, students must take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in their junior year of high school.
