AS ONE OF THE NATION'S LARGEST COMMERCIAL ARMORED VEHICLE SUPPLIERS, THE ARMORED GROUP RELIES ON PPG FINISHES personnel carrier—one that SWAT police and tactical units will rely on for high-risk missions. It's one in a long line of bullet- resistant vehicles built by The Armored Group (TAG). TAG entered the armored vehicle arena in 1992 as a manufacturers' distributor. This experience provided valuable insight with respect to customer expectations. By 2011 TAG was engaged in the production end of the business and was soon a major player in the cash-in-transit (CIT), or armored car, segment. Today, CIT vehicle manufacturing and refurbishing remain central to TAG's workload, along with three other areas of focus on a global level: government agencies, paramilitary groups (law enforcement vehicles) and executives/VIPs (high-end passenger vehicles and SUVs). "In most cases, a customer comes to us with a particular security threat to defeat and we offer a solution," explains Jeff Carnicom, chief operating officer for the company. "In the U.S., the typical threat might be an AK-47 assault rifle situation. While outside of the U.S. it's more about blast engagement such as IEDs— improvised explosive devices." In defense of such threats, a TAG vehicle is designed to provide "six sides" protection—front, rear, roof, floor, side walls and doors—and often includes several or all of the following enhancements: bullet-resistant glass, reinforced steel doors and roof, self- sealing fuel tank, armored battery, gunports, floor blast blankets, a reinforced firewall and run-flat tires.
