IN LIVING COLOR 30 THE COLOR SOLUTIONS TEAM'S "VOICE OF CUSTOMER" MISSION HELPS ENSURE CONTINUOUS ADVANCEMENTS FOR GETTING THE COLOR RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. With the continuous introduction of new car colors and how OEM production colors may drift from vehicle to vehicle, providing PPG customers with the most accurate variant color formulas and the best color tools takes constant vigilance. In essence that's the mission of PPG's color variant team. "We're always on the lookout for ways to improve our offerings and find innovative methods for achieving accurate color matches efficiently," explains Mike Henry, PPG global color tools and color variant manager. "Essential to this effort is getting feedback from the 'real world' through our Voice of Customer initiative." In its most recent study, the PPG color variant team visited more than to match the customer's vehicle, no matter whether the shop was using a solvent- or waterborne system. High praise was particularly evident with PPG waterborne users, given that the color chips are sprayed with actual waterborne paint. "It's like having a 'personal' 6,500-chip sprayout library" was one illustrative comment. Many of the best practices employed with our waterborne tools are now evident with the solventborne color decks as well. 80 collision centers and interviewed more than 150 industry professionals. At each location they observed firsthand the customer's workflow for color matching—and gained valuable feedback for PPG's variant formula program and other supportive color tools. One clear takeaway from the study was that PPG's variant chip decks were the number one "go-to" tool for identifying the correct color formula
