A great example occurred two years ago when Painthouse took on the restoration of a classic 1947 Hudson. During Randy's initial interviews with the customer, the decision was made to focus on a burgundy and black finish for the car. As he was printing out the renderings of his proposed concept, his printer ran out of red toner. So the vehicle color that was printed wasn't the burgundy they were proposing. However, in a moment of unexpected good fortune, the printed rendering now featured an olive-brown tone that would later serve as the inspiration for the Mothers Polish Gold Class Top 10 award-winning vehicle at SEMA. "After seeing how perfect this new color looked on the Hudson, I went back and told the customer, you have to trust me on this one," recalls Borcherding. "And thankfully, he did. It was the right choice." From Randy's perspective, this journey starts with visuals—developing new or reviewing existing renderings. "I think you have to see it to understand it," says Randy. "Are the wheels right? Do we need chrome? And, if so, how do these elements change the personality of the vehicle? As critical as these decisions can be within the development of any new project, an equally important consideration is color. Randy has trusted PPG for over 25 years to ensure his designs live up to the team's original vision—oftentimes experimenting with custom mix colors capable of taking his designs to the next level. "Choosing the right color is often tied to the heritage of the vehicle," Randy explains. "We don't want to ruin what's right about it or what the vehicle is supposed to represent." " THE RELATIONSHIP WITH PPG IS AWESOME. IT'S AMAZING HOW WELL THEY TAKE CARE OF US IN THE CUSTOM WORLD."
