Owners Robbie (left) and Mark Walker.
As second-generation owners of a
respected collision center in High Point,
N.C., Mark and Robbie Walker might have
been tempted to coast—making the most
of the great reputation and solid business
practices established by their father. But
that's not the Walker way. And as usual, it
was concern for customers that led to a
major building project involving the PPG
MVP Facility Layout & Design Service.
The original 1972 Larry Walker Body Shop
was located behind an old gas station
in downtown High Point. In 1980, Larry
and his wife, Pat, bought out the gas
station which enabled them to move to
Main Street. While it was nice to have
the frontage and exposure, they were
hemmed in and found they were writing a
lot of estimates for people who were only
casually interested in their services.
In 1988, Larry and Pat traded visibility for
possibility in the form of a 6.5-acre plot
of land that would give them plenty of
room for growth. Larry designed the new
facility himself, drawing upon his decades
of real-world experience. Meanwhile, the
couple's sons, Mark and Robbie, came of
age and began to take part in the business'
success story. They learned the Walker
way of doing things, which, in a nutshell is,
"Fix it like it's your own."
