HONORING
THE HUEY
PPG GALLERY
Helicopters played a major role in the
Vietnam War effort. This 1964 Bell
Iroquois model, better known as a Huey,
was one of some 7,000 of the iconic
choppers that served during that era. It
survived the war and thanks to PPG, two
dedicated distributors and a crew of war
veterans, the Huey has been fully restored
and is on permanent display in the Huey
Plaza at the Vietnam Era Museum and
Educational Center, Holmdel, N.J.
Working with local distributors Albert
Kemperle, Inc., and Norwood Auto Parts,
PPG provided the refinish products
while its specialists worked up the color
formulas needed to recreate the
chopper's combat-zone appearance.
The commercial coatings system included
DELFLEET
®
EVOLUTION F3997 Epoxy
Primer, FDGH Single Stage High Solids
Polyurethane Enamel (Olive Drab, code
24087), and DELFLEET ESSENTIAL
®
Single-Stage Polyurethane Enamel in low-
gloss black for the lettering.
Kelly Everhard, paint technician at
Finelines Auto Body, Atlantic Highlands,
and daughter of a Vietnam veteran Marine,
painted the Huey in her spare time, with
a large crew of veterans assisting in the
restoration—many of whom flew and
maintained Hueys during their tours of
duty. More than 4,000 hours were logged
during the volunteer effort.
